Part 2- Mythological Allusions: Persephone

Persephone    Mythological Allusion    Source: Edith Hamilton's Mythology

  • Daughter to Zeus and Demeter
  • As Persephone grew up and became more attractive, Hades couldn't resist her
  • Hades kidnapped Persephone one day, and took her to be his queen
  • Demeter was heart-broken, and she fell into a depression
  • Hades made a deal with Persephone and Demeter, allowing her to stay with Hades for four months each year and the rest with her mother
  • This developed the seasons; winter, spring, fall, and summer
Commentary: The main concept of this story is learning to accept that children don't always stay children, that they eventually have to grow up and live their own life. This concept can be attached to the book Peter Pan. Peter Pan insists that Wendy and her brothers spend the rest of their lives at Neverland, but Wendy tells Peter she needs to go home. Wendy and her brothers need to grow up, it's a part of life.
